A short drive from Luang Prabang delivers you to one of Laos’ iconic sights, Kuang Si Falls. This series of waterfalls has 3 tiers totaling a 50-metre drop into shallow pools, before continuing downstream. The pools make great swimming holes and are surrounded by a lush tropical jungle, making for a paradisiacal Blue Lagoon setting. Even if you don’t swim, the cool air surrounding the pools makes a pleasant day trip from Luang Prabang. Trails lead up to the top where you can see the stream feeding into the falls. Wear proper footwear, as the trails can get slippery, especially during the wet season.
The waterfall’s azure cascades of water make Kuang Si Falls one of Luang Prabang’s most popular tourist attractions. The waterfall itself is only part of the attraction, the journey there is filled with wondrous sights along the way. Enjoy views of emerald green rice fields along the river, and Hmong villages provide great places to stop and commune with villagers who still dress in their traditional ethnic attire. These are great places to purchase their hand woven crafts as souvenirs. The weather at Kuang Si Falls is always cooler, making it a really good place to escape the heat, but to escape the crowds it’s best to come early. For families staying at 3 Nagas Luang Prabang, Kuang Si Falls is an especially fun outing for the children, who will enjoy playing in the falls. For everyone who wants to swim or play in the pools, changing rooms are located near the entrance. Plan on spending an entire relaxing day, bring a picnic with you from Luang Prabang or buy food and drinks from the concession stands near the tables at the front of the lower level pools.
Bear Rescue Center
On the way to the Kuang Si Falls entrance is the Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Center. Visitors to this refuge can stroll along its wooden boardwalks and view these adorable creatures as they lolligag around, play and generally look more heartwarming than hazardous. Educational signs inform guests of the dilemma of concerned people who want to help the Asian black bear from wildlife traffickers, but no amount of sad facts in Laos’ wilds can keep these rescued bears from being completely lovable.
In 2019 Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Center completed its third Bear House and a Wildlife Hospital, with plans for an additional 2 bear houses, a carnivore enclosure and a holding house for pangolins and other reptiles prior to their release back into the wild.
Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Center provides valuable training and employment opportunities to local villagers so that they can be the face of Lao’s future in wildlife conservation.
